Hospitals of the future
In HUS’s construction projects, we are proceeding in accordance with our long-term renovation and construction program for hospital buildings.
In the current investment program for 2025–2028, we have reserved in excess of EUR 600 million for hospital construction and renovations. In addition, HUS has construction projects with other funding schemes, such as the Laakso Joint Hospital to be built together with the City of Helsinki.
The co-operation agreement of the Southern Finland collaborative area has required a critical review and prioritization of investment plans, while ensuring that the most essential construction projects for HUS’s strategy and operational continuity can be carried out.
Extensive renovation and modernization programs are underway at the Meilahti, Jorvi, and Peijas hospital campuses, through which we are updating and expanding our building infrastructure. This prepares us for the future needs of specialized healthcare and ensures that HUS has facilities that meet the demands of its operations.
We are renewing the old building stock with renovations
Our real estate stock includes buildings constructed in different eras, built according to the regulations and construction methods and the operational needs in force at the time. Today’s specialized medical care sets new requirements on facilities, demanding even significant modifications in some cases.
Over the past decade, the renovation needs of our properties have been examined with increasingly comprehensive condition studies, both in terms of indoor air and building structures. The results will be used to identify potential repair needs and they will lay the foundation for the renovation program, including its scope and schedule of urgency. Our goal is to get up-to-date condition studies carried out on all the properties we own.
We are reforming old premises during renovations, which will also help us in fixing their technical problems and other issues. In addition, we make hundreds of smaller renovation investments in HUS every year. They will allow us to extend the service life of the premises until more extensive renovation, because the renovation needed for the building and the relocation of hospital operations prior to the renovation cannot always be carried out quickly.
Our goal is to provide our personnel and customers with safe, healthy and functional facilities that comply with our operational requirements.
