Treatment of endometriosis
Keywords:We treat patients with endometriosis, i.e. tissue similar to the tissue that forms the lining of the uterus growing outside of the uterine cavity, in all HUS gynecological units. The most difficult surgical procedures and treatment of infertility are centralized in Helsinki.

Endometriosis is a disease in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, such as in the ovaries. The most typical symptom is painful menstruation, but pain can also occur outside the menstrual period. Other typical symptoms include problems with defecation and urination, and pain during sexual intercourse. The disease can also affect fertility. Endometriosis affects 10–15% of people of childbearing age.
The primary treatment for endometriosis is hormonal therapy. Hormonal therapy is always recommended if you are currently not trying to conceive. However, in addition to hormonal treatment, surgical treatment and fertility treatments may be needed.
We treat patients with endometriosis who have not achieved adequate response to hormonal therapy provided by primary health care. In addition to gynecologists, the endometriosis team includes endometriosis nurses, physiotherapists, a social worker, a gastric surgeon, a urologist, and a radiologist. If necessary, we also work together with the HUS pain management clinic. For treatment at our unit, you need a physician's referral.
