HUS year 2024: Responsibility
We are accountable for our actions above all to our patients but also to our employees and stakeholders, and more broadly to society at large. In our activities, we want to promote all aspects of responsibility: social, financial, and environmental responsibility.
Responsibility seminars for personnel
During the year, we organized two responsibility-themed seminars for our personnel: a responsibility seminar and an environmental seminar.
Their topics included promoting environmental responsibility in healthcare and effective change management in specialized healthcare, the three patients in sustainability work: the planet, homo sapiens and society, a new environmental program for 2025–2030, and examples of HUS’s environmental activities.
The distinction for the sustainability act of the year was awarded to the HUS Pharmacy medicine waste team for its systematic efforts in reducing the amount of medicine waste and for changing the project into a permanent operating model.
Responsibility survey
Two students of medicine at the University of Helsinki conducted a responsibility survey at HUS as part of their advanced thesis studies. In the survey, the students wanted to explore the views of the heads of divisions and nurse managers on the current state of responsibility at HUS, as well as to examine the attitudes, information, procedures and goals related to supervisors’ responsibility.
The results of the survey revealed that attitudes towards responsibility are positive in all areas of responsibility, i.e. social, financial and environmental responsibility, but that there is still a need to improve the relevant practices.
It would be good to provide additional guidance on responsibility and communications should be clearer, in order to support and unify decision-making. There should be more discussions on responsibility and related training should be increased. Good and positive attitudes should be refined into good practices.
Videos on responsibility
We provided information on responsibility to our personnel using responsibility-themed videos posted on the intranet. In the videos, we presented various responsibility activities in which we are already engaged. The aim of the videos is to make our personnel understand what responsibility and sustainability are all about and how they are already reflected in our daily lives.
The topics of the videos included
- employees with intellectual disabilities working in medical equipment maintenance in Hyvinkää
- more sustainable procurement
- solar power plants
- reducing medicine waste
- reducing the costs of outsourced device maintenance.
Social responsibility
Equality is one of our values. We want our personnel to feel well and all patients to receive the care they need. In 2024, we also invested in the accessibility of our website.

Environmental responsibility
The climate road map guided our environmental work, and more than half of the actions were either ongoing or completed in 2024. The positive development of waste amounts continued and our energy efficiency improved.

Financial responsibility
We continued our productivity program to balance our finances. In addition, we had to start co-operation negotiations in the fall, which will result in a reduction of 778 person-years.
