Customer and research panels
HUS has several customer and research panels. Each department has their own panels. Customer and research panel members work together in groups with our employees to develop of our services and research. The panels meet 4–6 times a year, usually on weekday afternoons. A panel membership lasts for two years. Panel members can be hospital customers, and they do not need to have expert by experience training. Customer panel members receive an attendance compensation for each meeting.
Experts by experience
An expert by experience is a patient or a patient’s loved one with personal experience of an illness, disability, or specific life situation. At HUS, experts by experience work as a pair with a professional, or in a group. They participate in service development and staff training or attend group instruction or appointments. Experts by experience receive compensation for their work.
We require that people applying for expert by experience tasks have completed expert by experience training. Tasks involving group instruction and appointments also require peer support training.
Peer supporter
A peer supporter has survived an illness, injury, or life situation, or has adjusted to living with the issue and wishes to support others in their illness. Peer supporters are needed for a wide range of patients and their loved ones in different hospitals. Peer support work is voluntary and therefore peer supporters do not receive compensation. Peer support work at HUS is coordinated by OLKA. Peer supporters’ shifts mainly take place on weekdays.
Other volunteer tasks include lobby assistants and conversation partners. Anyone can apply for these tasks regardless of their experience. Emergency departments have shifts during the days and evenings.
