HUS year 2024: Laboratories and imaging

Laboratory and imaging service production increased despite a reduction in staff numbers.

In 2024, the Diagnostic Center, which is responsible for HUS's laboratory and imaging activities, employed around 3,300 laboratory and imaging experts in around 150 units.

Our goal is to further increase productivity, for example, by utilizing artificial intelligence applications and software robotics.

We improved the handling of laboratory matters

We installed new self-registration kiosks in 32 laboratories and improved the laboratory appointment booking system. Around 1.7 million appointments were made through the system in 2024. The availability of laboratory appointments was good.

We opened up 50 different imaging examinations in the Maisa portal for patients to book themselves.

We succeeded in reducing the waiting list for genetics treatment, despite increasing demand.

Use of the Examinations Hub (Tutkimukseen tulijan talo) increased and the hub is one of the most popular sites in the Health Village online service.

We introduced artificial intelligence applications in imaging

There were more orders for imaging examinations than were determined in the budgets and service plans. This caused local backlogs in the availability of imaging examinations or statements. However, through the development of AI applications and job descriptions, productivity and the equipment utilization rate have improved.

We introduced new artificial intelligence applications in imaging. They support radiologists in image interpretation or speed up image formation in magnetic resonance imaging. These applications will help meet the ever-increasing demand for imaging examinations.

We launched the For professionals site

In the fall, we launched a new “For professionals” website for clinicians. The website provides a summary of information on the selection, use and interpretation of laboratory and imaging examinations.

Customer satisfaction remains high

Customer satisfaction (NPS) of patients using laboratory and imaging services remained high at 88 for the full year. The likelihood of clinicians and clients to recommend laboratory and imaging services increased significantly.  The NPS for clinicians in 2024 was 23 (previously 13) and for clients 50 (previously 30).
