HUS year 2024: Teaching and training
The goal of teaching was to further smooth the transition to traineeships and promote the practice of respectful treatment of students.
In 2024, we had students and specializing physicians as follows
- 1,986 undergraduates in the Faculty of Medicine
- 478 specializing physicians
- 18 specializing dentists
- 4,901 students from universities of applied sciences and 396 post-secondary level students.
In 2024, we continued three roadmap projects in teaching related to
- centralized application service for traineeships
- respectful treatment of students and specializing physicians
- the learning environment and respectful and equal treatment.
Centralized application service for traineeships
In the spring of 2024, we opened a central application service for traineeships for medical students and newly graduated physicians. The application service includes more than 60 percent of HUS units, and it helped approximately 30 students and approximately 35 physicians seeking legalization after completing their training outside the EU/EEA to obtain a traineeship. The project will continue until 2027 with the development and deployment of the application and placement system.
Respectful treatment and well-conducted onboarding
The project for respectful treatment of students and specializing professionals in the fields of medicine and for organizing good-quality onboarding has ended. The project resulted in onboarding materials, a weekly plan template and an onboarding recommendation for students and specializing physicians in medicine and dentistry. The materials will be used in the HUS departments.
An environment to support learning and equal practices
The project on an environment that supports learning and equal practices resulted in ethical guidelines, short trainings and uniform practices in teaching related to the rights of the learners. The central themes are psychological safety in learning situations, changing work life expectations, and the need for career guidance for medical students. We take these into account in the event and training planning at HUS teaching.
Strengthened collaboration in medical training
Established collaboration with the Committee for Research, Education, Development and Innovation (TKKI), HUS’s multi-discipline teaching panel, the network of specializing seniors, and the physicians and dentists specialized in training continued.
HUS’s research management’s teaching team started teaching-network collaboration with the training units for medicine, psychology, logopedics, and pharmacy. The aim of the collaboration is to strengthen the support activities for teaching and training.
We were involved in the launch of a national network of training directors and managers in the collaborative areas of HUS and the university hospitals. National activities started in November 2024.
We developed our teaching activities and our events based on feedback
The average quality score for clinical guidance and the learning environment provided at HUS was 8.65, which was better than in the previous years.
Based on the feedback, we have developed teaching structures that would better support the learning and wellbeing of students and specializing physicians. We also organized various events based on the feedback.
Guidance and assessment competencies ensure the quality of training
We compiled a description of the career path opportunities of a medical educator in contact teaching to guide career planning. In cooperation with the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, we organized the TUURA career training for HUS personnel, and in the future, it will be possible for career instructors to organize career guidance sessions for employees at different stages of their careers and to support them. We have also provided pedagogical training for medical educators.
